A research collaboration between DTU Electrical Engineering and MAN Energy Solutions on limiting ships' emission of black smoke and NOx has received a new international award.

An industrial PhD project carried out by Kræn Vodder Busk in collaboration between DTU and MAN Energy Solutions has just won the prestigious Control Engineering Practice Paper Prize. The award is presented by the International Federation of Autonomic Control (IFAC).

"Of course, we are proud of the many awards. Most importantly, however, the research has been relevant and applicable to MAN Energy Solutions (...)."

The award is given for outstanding contributions to practical applied research in automatic control and regulation. The award was received for an article about the research published in the technical scientific journal: Control Engineering Practice with the authors Kræn Vodder Busk (formerly Nielsen), Mogens Blanke, Lars Eriksson and Morten Vejlgaard-Laursen.

This is not the first time the project has been honoured. In 2018, it was awarded the Rudolf Kalman Best Paper Award by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the same year, Kræn Vodder Busk was awarded the Innovation Fund Denmark's Industrial Researcher Prize.

“Of course, we are proud of the many awards. Most importantly, however, the research has been relevant and applicable to MAN Energy Solutions (formerly MAN Diesel and Turbo). Our project solved an urgent environmental problem for shipping by significantly reducing pollution with NOx and soot from large marine diesel engines,” says Professor Mogens Blanke, DTU Electrical Engineering, who was the principal supervisor on the project.
